Illogan Handbell Ringers

Old bells, new ringers

Many years ago, when the St. Illogan tower bells needed repair, a set of 12 handbells with the same keynote (Bb) was bought so that bells could be rung outside on the church forecourt. Once the tower bells had been rehung, the handbells were put away and mouldered in a box in the cellar of the Old Rectory (now Maningham) until they were accidentally re-discovered by a boisterous youth group. Having been cleaned and repaired, the handbells found eager young learners in the post-war years and, since then, many different people have rung them. Notable amongst these were Joyce and Selwyn Brown who did much to promote handbell ringing, not only within the parish of St. Illogan, but in Cornwall and the West Country over several decades.!

Late in 2013, thanks to Joyce’s encouragement, aided by Sylvia Mason, a new group tentatively took up the bells once more and ‘ILLOGAN HANDBELL RINGERS’ was formed in 2014. Currently, we meet on Wednesdays at 2.15 – 4:00pm in the Parish Room of St. Illogan Church (3rd Weds. excepted when we meet at St. Mary’s Hall, Portreath).  First part from 2.15pm for experienced players; second part from 3.15pm for newcomers.

‘We play a variety of music ranging from folk songs (Cornish as well as ‘up country’) to hymns and carols, and from music hall favourites to themes from the classics arranged for bells. Our aims, as a group, are threefold: to have fun learning to play; to enjoy making music; and to share our joy in music-making with others.
